Does Your Organization Effectively Use Social Media to Build Community? A Quick Test

Social media can be an incredible tool for NGOs and social enterprises—not just for getting the word out, but for fostering real connections and mobilizing people toward action. But are you actually building community, or are your posts just disappearing into the algorithm void?

Take this quick test to find out! Each section includes three key questions to help you evaluate your strategy.

1. Are You Talking With People or At Them?

A real community thrives on conversation. If your social media is just a one-way megaphone, you might be missing opportunities to engage.

  • Do our posts invite responses (e.g., asking questions, seeking opinions, or prompting discussions)?
  •  Do we actively reply to comments, DMs, and mentions to keep conversations going?
  •  Do we create opportunities for the communities we journey with to interact with each other, like hosting live Q&As or discussion threads?

If you answered “no” to any of these, try shifting your strategy toward two-way communication. Simple changes—like asking open-ended questions or responding more frequently—can boost engagement.

2. Do the Communities We Journey With Feel Seen and Heard?

A true community isn’t just about an organization—it’s about the people within it. Social media should amplify the voices of those driving change, not just those supporting it.

  •  Do we regularly highlight community leaders, grassroots changemakers, and the people doing the real work?
  •  Do we use our platform to center their stories, experiences, and expertise rather than speaking for them?
  •   Do we create content that resonates emotionally—such as personal stories, behind-the-scenes moments, or direct quotes from those leading the efforts?

If these aren’t part of your strategy yet, try incorporating community-driven storytelling. Hand over the mic whenever possible.

3. Are You Consistent, or Do You Disappear?

Building community takes time. Sporadic posting can make it hard for your audience to stay engaged.

  •   Do we post content at least 2-3 times per week to maintain visibility?
  •   Do we have a content plan or calendar to avoid long periods of inactivity?
  •  Are we consistently engaging with comments and messages, not just posting and leaving?

If consistency is a challenge, consider batch-creating content or using scheduling tools to keep your presence steady.

4. Do You Share More Than Just Your Own Content?

A thriving community isn’t just about your organization—it’s about the larger movement you’re part of.

  •  Do we share and amplify content from the communities we journey with, grassroots activists, and other organizations?
  •  Do we engage with trending topics or relevant discussions in our sector?
  •   Are we resharing or celebrating the voices of those driving change (e.g., retweeting, reposting stories, or sharing testimonials)?

If you’re only posting about your own work, try engaging more with others—it builds relationships and strengthens your credibility.

5. Are People Taking Action?

A community isn’t just engaged—it’s active. Your social media should inspire people to do something meaningful.

  •  Do our posts clearly guide people toward action (e.g., signing a petition, attending an event, joining an advocacy effort)?
  •  Do we make it easy for people to participate by providing clear steps and accessible links?
  •   Are we seeing real engagement in our initiatives beyond likes and shares—such as new organizers stepping up or community-led solutions gaining traction?

If your social media isn’t driving action, focus on stronger calls to action and making participation simple and compelling.

How Did You Do?

If you answered “yes” to most of these, your social media is on the right track! If you had a few “no” answers, don’t worry—small changes can make a big impact.
